Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to determine the type of psycho-social support students of Federal College of Education, Kano received after traumatisation in a shooting that occurred in the
school. Population of the study were students from the school of arts and social sciences. A
sample of I60 students (83 males and 77 females) were purposely selected for the study. Test-
retest reliability co-efficient 0.81 was established for the instrument- using Pearson product
moment correlation. A descriptive survey research design was adopted and data collected were
analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequencies and simple percentages. Results from the
study indicated that majority of the students received psycho-social support from their families
and a small proportion received from friends. Additionally, the students are satisfied with the
psycho-social support they received from their families and the support they received has been
helpful. It was recommended that professional support should be provided as quickly as possible
to students after a traumatic events. Governmental and non- governmental organizations should
also provide immediate crisis intervention to the students who suffer from post-traumatic stress or
trauma-related symptoms. |
