Abstract: The kinetics of the oxidation of sulphite ion by diaquotetrakis(2,2'-bipyridine)-µ-oxodiruthenium (III) ion, has been investigated. The reaction is first order with respect to sulphite and oxidant. On the basis of the observed anion catalysis, the lack of conclusive evidence for intermediate complex formation and non-conformity of the observed kinetic data with the Michaelis-Menten equation, it is proposed that the reaction most probably occurs by the outer-sphere mechanism.
