Item Evaluating the Impact of eBook on Reading Motivation of Students of Higher Learning in Nigerian Universities(Columbus IFLA, 2016-08-02) Akpokodje, Vera Nkiruka; Ukwuoma, Scholastica ChizomaReading among students is a vital aspect of their learning process and should be encouraged, any effort or innovation that improves the reading motivation of students is worth sustaining. This study was carried out to evaluate the impact of ebooks on reading motivation of students in Nigerian Higher institution based on observations that the rate of reading has been dwindling and majority of youths prefer to while away time on frivolities rather than reading to widen their intelligence. The study adopted descriptive survey research method the population consist of students from University of Nigeria and University of Jos. The findings of the study showed that majority of the students studied were aware of ebooks, and they normally access them through Google books. The materials often used were textbooks and reference materials; the use them mainly for study and research. The students were motivated to use ebooks because they could read them at the comfort of their homes, it saved a lot of time for them and these books were so easy to search and had created a lot of impact as many of them agreed that it had improved their reading habits, increase the volumes of books they read and helps them to understand the text. The study therefore concluded that to encourage good reading habits among students, the universities should provide broadband Internet access and enough facilities to accommodate all the students. Librarians should intensify in their effort to create more awareness among the students.Item An Assessment of Internet Utilisation in Selected Agricultural Colleges of Plateau State, Nigeria.(INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND APPLIED RESEARCH, IJSAR, 2016-01) Akpokodje Edore; Akpokodje VeraThe study investigated the patterns of Internet use among students of agriculture in some selected colleges of agriculture in Plateau State, Nigeria. A well-structured questionnaire was distributed among the 128 Higher National Diploma (HND) students of agriculture in colleges of agriculture in Plateau State. Questionnaires were given out to students using a simple random sampling technique. Simple frequency tables were used to analyze the data collected. A t-test and correlation were also performed on the data. The present study demonstrates and elaborates the various aspects of Internet use such as; most frequently used place for internet use, purpose for which the Internet is used, use of Internet services, problems faced by users and satisfaction level of users with Internet facility provided in the colleges. The study results revealed that 78.1% of the respondents had used the Internet for research, 45.3% had accessed the Internet at a cyber café, slow access speed had been the major problem faced by users (48.8%), students within the age group of 20 to 25 years had spent more time on the Internet than other age categories (43.8%), majority of the respondents utilized the World Wide Web service of the Internet (50.8%) and there is significant association (perfectly positive relationship) between Internet facility, awareness and Internet use. Some suggestions have been put forth to make the service more beneficial for the academic community of agricultural colleges under study.Item RE-TUNING FEMALE STUDENTS’ PSYCHOLOGICAL STATUS IN CHEMISTRY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KOGI STATE NIGERIA(Academic Research International, 2013) Sunday Oni Owojaiye1 , Ezinne Charity Maxwell2The study investigated the re-tuning female students’ psychological status in chemistry in secondary schools in Kogi State, Nigeria. The purpose was to investigate the psychological status of the female students as against their male counterparts in the pursuit of chemistry and the motivational status of the female students as against the male students and to know the interest status of the female students against the males. Three hypotheses were used in the study. A sample of six hundred (600) was randomly selected from Central and Western Senatorial Districts of Kogi State (300 females and 300 males). The study design was survey. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire, structured and validated (with face and content) validity and subjected to a test re-test reliability index of 0.75r. Data collection was carried out by the six research assistants used for the study. Data was analyzed using Spearman Ranking Order at 0.05level of Significance and at 598 degree of Freedom. The study indicated that female students do not study chemistry based on phobia and the female students believed that chemistry is time consuming, has a lot of theories and more calculations. The study recommends among others that female students who pass chemistry with high grade should be given incentives in monetary and award of excellence to motivate others.Item Performance Expectancy as a Determinant of Use of Open Access Resources by Lecturers in University Of Ibadan, Nigeria(International Journal of Academic Library and Information Science, 2017-03) Oluseun Taiwo Akanni; Airen Edale AdetimirinThe research work examined the open access resources as a major source of information resources available to lecturers. Open access provides information resources to lecturers at no cost. Notable among the open access resources are Institutional Repository, Open access databases, open access journals, Author’s personal archives and open text books. Objective of this study was to examine performance expectancy, as a factor affecting the use of open access resources by lecturers in University of Ibadan. The design adopted for the study was the descriptive research and population comprised lecturers from University of Ibadan. Random sampling was used to select 174 as sample size. Questionnaire for Lecturers was used as the research instrument. The analysis was done using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages, while inferential statistics such as the Pearson product moment correlation and regression analysis was used to test hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Majority of the lecturers (77.1%) used open access resources to publish articles in the open access medium and also refer their students for assignment completion. Open access resources were useful to most of the lecturers (76.3%): of relative advantage and very relevant to the academic activities. However the study also revealed that Performance expectancy is a strong determinant of use of open access resources as result showed there was a significant positive correlation between performance expectancy and use of open access resources by lecturers (r= .867**; n = 152; p <0.05)by lecturers. In conclusion, performance expectancy is a strong determinant of use of open access resources by lecturers.
